Gobble, gobble, gobble.

Before I took my blogging break, I took pictures of some of my turkeys. Then I never used them in a post. My friend Paula, who blogs at Sweet Pea, also wrote a post on her turkeys.
http://www.virginiasweetpea.com/2011/11/turkey-time.html
She asked me to share mine, so I thought I'd better do it before the Thanks-giving timeline was over.

Before I talk about the turkeys, I have to tell you about this shelf.
My son made it for me when he was in high school.
This is where I keep my collection, year-round.
The VT stands for Virginia Tech.

I took these pictures in September, and I never edited them. I'm just going to show them from left to right across the shelf.
The turkey on the left has a partner that you'll see at the end. They have really neat feet claws that I didn't photograph. They're candle holders, although I've never used them like that.
The turkey on the right reminds me of carnival glass and has a deep opening. What do you think it was used for?

The turkey on the left is made of wood and is very lightweight.
The one on the right is my oldest turkey. If you look closely, you can see the letters VA. It actually says VA TECH across its back. I saw its twin at a local antique store. It's a bank, maybe for tuition to Tech. hahaha

I love the turkey on the left. Its feathers are so colorful. It has a hook and sometimes I hang it on my window latch.
The turkey on the right is solely decorative. I like its color, too.

Here is the mate to the one I started with. I looked at them again while I was writing this, and now I know why I don't have a picture of its feet claws.  I'm too short.

I also saw some turkeys that I set out for Thanksgiving. I'll show you those next year.

Happy Thanksgiving.
Enjoy your special time with family and friends.

Who are the Highty - Tighties?

Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets regimental band, the Highty-Tighties, to travel to Duke game

Col. Gary Jackson, U.S. Army, Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and Highty-Tighty Class of 1978 shown at the Duke game in 2009

BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 20, 2011 – The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets will be represented at the Virginia Tech versus Duke football game on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Durham, N.C., by the regimental band, the Highty-Tighties.
For only the second time in the last 15 years, the Highty-Tighties will be traveling to an away game in support of the football team.
“The cadets in the band are all very excited about travelling to Duke. We look forward to any chance to support our football team, to get the Highty-Tighty name out there and to represent the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets well. The band was disappointed when a scheduling conflict made us unable to go to an away game last year, and we’re happy for the chance to go back to Duke and show them what the Highty-Tighties are all about,” stated Cadet 1st Lt. Marc Easton of Chesapeake, Va., a senior majoring in aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering who is a recipient of the Catherine H. and Stuart Johnson '41 Emerging Leader Scholarship and is a member of the Civilian Leader Track program. Easton is serving as the Performance Officer for the band this semester.
The Highty-Tighties formed in 1893 and is today the oldest collegiate band in the Commonwealth of Virginia. They are a field band and provide military music for all cadet activities as well as perform at numerous events on campus, in the local community, and around the nation. The Highty-Tighties have three ensemble groups, the Southern Colonels, the jazz ensemble; En Corps, a string quartet; and a brass quintet.
The band performs in many parades each year such as the University Homecoming Parade, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22; the Veterans Day Parade in Roanoke, Va., which they will march in on Saturday, Nov. 5; and the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York, N.Y, which they will be marching in on Saturday, March 17.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets has produced military, public, and corporate leaders since the university was founded in 1872. It is one of just two military corps within a large public university. The corps holds its members to the highest standards of loyalty, honor, integrity, and self-discipline. In return, cadets achieve high academic success and a long-lasting camaraderie with fellow members. Virginia Tech, the most comprehensive university in Virginia, is dedicated to quality, innovation, and results to the commonwealth, the nation, and the world.

I wanted to share this article with you because I've been a fan of the Corps of Cadets and their band, the Highty-Tighties, ever since I was a student at Tech.
We will not be at the game today, so this post will be my Hokie Highlight.

Hokie Highlights - Game 5

These are random shots from the parking lot as we entered the stadium.

The Corps band, the Highty Tighties and their alumni band, performed before the game.

The cheerleaders led the team on the field. My friend is carrying the flag with the Hokie Bird on it.

I experimented with a staged shot in the stands.

The team wore orange jerseys, which I really liked, but a lot of people didn't. Back in the day, Tech wore a lot of orange. That's when I started liking it.

Aren't these the cutest little boys? Their grandparents sit beside us in the stands. First, their daughter brought one son to the game. This year, she had her second son.

The stands were full of excited fans, many who came back for Homecoming.

Tech won the game, 30 - 14.

Tailgate at the Tech-Miami Game

Saturday Va Tech played Miami. It was a beautiful day to tailgate.

Sorry, Daddy. I cut off your head to concentrate on the table. It was easier to do that than explain to him why I was taking pictures of the food. This week we had meatballs, fried chicken (from Kroger), wraps, potato salad (both from Sams Club), deviled eggs and potato chips.

I wanted to buy brownie bites, but there weren't any at Sams, so I had to fix some in that wonderful pan I told you about in an earlier post. Plus we had veggies and dip. Aren't those peppers just gorgeous? I even took some to eat during the game. (Don't tell security. You aren't supposed to take food inside the stadium.)

Did you notice the "VT" on the tablecloth? I should have taken this picture from the other side.

Can you tell there's not as many people there? Our friends are still in Hawaii. My brother and sister-in-law are in NY visiting their son and his family.

These two pictures are just to show you some of the people in the parking lot.

Now this is the best picture. This is my other brother, who isn't really a Tech fan. (He's a William and Mary graduate.) He tries to come to one game each season.

My son sat across from us. I think he's checking scores in this picture.

Oh, you didn't hear who won the game? Va Tech beat Miami, 38-35. It was a very exciting game.

Too Cold to Tailgate

When Tech played Clemson last Saturday, it was cold and rainy. Instead of trying to tailgate outside, we decided we would eat in the Bowman Room. This is a room in Cassell Coliseum. Notice the VT on the covered cornices. If you look closely, you can see the stadium through that window.

The food was wonderful. There was barbecue, chicken, and Italian sausage. There was also baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, and fresh veggies.

Oh, I forgot. There was also chili and cornbread. I know the room looks empty, but that's because we were second in line. Don't Mom and Dad look good? Guess where I found their shirts? If you guessed Goodwill, you were right. If you didn't, go back and look at the name of this blog. I love Goodwill.

Look at that table of desserts. I'll take one of each. Now notice this lady's attire. I love seeing all the different Hokie things people have. Her tote is likely handmade as that fabric has been very popular around here.

I actually didn't get any dessert, but I did take a small bite of my brother's chocolate cake.

It's a good thing the food was so good, because Tech lost the game. Let's hope they play better today and get a win against Miami. Go HOKIES!

Hokie Friends

This is my very favorite Hokie cheerleader. I've known this young man since he was born. His mom and I taught together. While she was pregnant, I gave her small gifts each month. They had one thing in common. They were all orange! Is it any wonder that he ended up going to VA  Tech?

Well, both his parents also graduated from VA Tech. They
might have influenced his decision as well.

I also love the Hokie Bird. When I was at Tech, the Hokie Bird was actually called the Fighting Gobbler and it was very menacing.

Somewhere along the way, that gobbler was tamed and became the beloved Hokie Bird.

Look at that face. Isn't it the cutest thing? (No, I'm not talking about me. I'm talking about the turkey, silly.)

Today TECH plays Clemson, our first ACC foe. It will be a big game for both teams. Kickoff is set for 6 pm - and it will be cooooooooold.

Go HOKIES!

A Hokie Flower

See the label? I'm Aunt Patti. Maddie and Abbie are my two great-nieces. They live in NY, so I don't get to see them very often. Their mom and dad met at Va Tech and married after they graduated from that wonderful school - so dear to my heart. hehehe

They made this for me. Can you tell what it is?

How about now? Did you guess that it was a pen? Well, it's not just any pen. It's a very special pen.

It's a Hokie pen, made from orange and maroon duct tape.

Have you made anything out of duct tape?

Hokie Highlights - Marshall Game

This is my cousin who invited us to tailgate with them. Her entire family went to Marshall. She is showing off the cookies that she bought especially for us. We were surprised that Walmart made cookies for the opposing team!

She told us not to bring anything, but I had to take something. This is a football tray from Dollar Tree that I filled with green candy for Marshall and orange (circus peanuts) and maroon candy (strawberry licorice) for Tech.

This is another cousin. She told me she played tennis while she was at Marshall. (Notice that my Dad likes to get in the pictures.)

This is my third cousin, their brother, who was at the tailgate. It was great to see all of them.

Their parking spot was right beside where the cheerleaders and team enter.

Marshall is the Thundering Herd. (I think he's a buffalo.)

I like that the team is dressed up. At Tech, they wear sweatsuits/jogging pants.

This is my uncle, Mom's brother. He is an usher at the games.

See the motorcycle. It's dressed up like the buffalo.

The cheerleaders came up in the stands. I was disappointed that my favorite cheerleader didn't come to this game. I guess they have to take turns.

We were so impressed at how friendly and welcoming the Marshall fans were - really a class act. They were anxious to tell us we wouldn't be treated the way fans were treated in Morgantown. (That's another post I could do, but I won't.) After the game, they congratulated us on our win and wished us a safe trip home. Go HERD, as long as they aren't playing my HOKIES.

Happy Hokie Fall

If God's not a Hokie, then why do the leaves turn
orange and maroon in the fall?

That sentiment is my favorite bumper sticker. For those of you who might not know, a Hokie is a Virginia Tech fan.

Thanks to Brynn Cody, a fellow Hokie, for this picture.

Flyover, Part 2

I hope you saw my earlier post about the flyover at Va Tech last Saturday. I couldn't get blogger to post this picture of the actual flyover. I'm hoping that it will show it now.
